Distribution Whitespots
When a retailer sells your brand, but not the category that matters
An anonymized consumer-products manufacturer already worked with a major European online retailer. The relationship looked healthy, and that was exactly why the gap stayed invisible.
The observation
- The brand was already present in several categories at the retailer.
- A direct competitor was present in an adjacent target category.
- The target brand was absent from that specific category.
- Comparable products from the brand were available through other channels.
What the finding is and is not
An assortment gap is a potential opportunity, not a confirmed listing decision. Range strategy, margin, logistics or an existing agreement can all explain an absence.
The opportunity requires commercial validation before outreach. What monitoring provides is the specific category, the competitor context and the evidence to start that conversation.
