Distribution Whitespots
How an industrial manufacturer identified a distributor white spot
Manufacturer A, a German industrial manufacturer, already had broad distribution coverage. The commercial question was not where the channel existed, but where it quietly did not.
The starting point
Manufacturer A sells through a large network of technical distributors. Channel managers reviewed coverage periodically, but a full manual comparison across every distributor and every relevant category was never realistic.
A structured comparison identified one German electrical distributor that operated within a commercially relevant category and prominently carried a direct competitor, Competitor B, while the manufacturer's equivalent presence was not detected.
How the finding was validated
- Multiple distributors in the same category were compared under the same logic.
- Distributors with detectable existing brand presence were excluded as candidates.
- One candidate remained after counterchecking.
- Source evidence and the distributor's own category structure supported the finding.
Why the exception matters
The value is not finding every distributor. It is identifying the exceptions: the few places where a competitor is present in a relevant category and the manufacturer is not detected.
The finding remains a potential opportunity that requires commercial validation. It gives a channel manager a specific starting point with the evidence attached.
